Guinea wants to refine its bauxite

Conakry plans to climb the aluminum value chain, as global demand for the metal skyrockets.

Construction work on a plant to process bauxite into alumina began in late March in the prefecture of Boffa. By 2028, the plant owned by China’s State Power Investment Corporation (SPIC) is expected to refine 1.2 million, then 2 million tons of bauxite each year, employing 600 people. At the same time, Guinea is increasing its photovoltaic projects in order to “green” the refining process, which is electricity-intensive.
